A few years ago my wife Susan and I participated in a Fourth of July art show at the Latigo and Lace Art Gallery in Augusta Montana. The show was wonderful and many of our artist friends were in attendance. We stayed at a wonderful bed and breakfast and the next day, all of the artists went to see the renowned Augusta Forth of July Rodeo.
Rodeos are a great place to get material for paintings of cowboys, horses and other western subjects, so we were all armed with our sketchbooks and cameras. I was really taken by the athleticism of this bull (I think his name was Blackjack, but I’m not sure).
I did a few quick sketches and took some photos of him and knew I would someday paint him. I hope you can feel the power of this mass of muscle that I tried to capture in my painting Bull Market.
